Professional video camera batteries include 'logic' electronics status, a
method of communicating battery levels with the camera. I get 20%
increment lights on the side of the batteries, and the appropriate level
indicator in the viewfinder. That's as close as it gets, and this on
batteries costing several hundred GBP each.

The battery level indicator on the 1D is pretty clumsy. A battery icon
that shows its entirety when full - to - half, shows half of the icon at
half - to - empty, and flashes that half when about to expire. Bag-o-
shite really. It means I carry a spare battery as mandatory. Mind you, it
does last a fair amount of time during casual use.
