Marketing, pure and simple (from the eighth dimension!) It's for the people who count pixels and don't care about image quality. OK, that's an exaggeration - I think going to 10 megapixels would be an advantage if you use lenses good enough to take advantage of it. But I'm not interested in anything over 10 megapixels in reduced frame 35mm format.
