But by then, APS-C will be the standard. Correct me if I'm wrong, but
2200 GBP is about 4000 US. Hardly prosumer territory.

The 5D is on sale in the UK for between 2200 and 2500 GBP today. In
three
years you can knock a grand off, and Nikon and (hopefully) Pentax will
be
selling too. I think it's inevitable. The technology is advancing at an
ever-increasing rate, it would seem. Certainly with electronics....
