Ring-type in-lens motors (USM/AF-S Ring-type) are faster, in all but the lightest lenses. You can easily verify this with a Nikon body like the D70 or F80, by switching between say a 28-105 (Body-driven) and a 24-120 AF-S.

I don't think you can prove anything general about the types of motors that way.

If I were to hazard a guess about the in-body motors used by Nikon, it would say that both of these bodies have a cheap and not very capable one - and that the D2X would focus the above mentioned lens faster.
