I never use the *istD without the grip. I find it makes the camera much easier to grasp and control. The additional heft anchors it for a smoother, steadier shot. I also like the vertical position shutter release and thumb-wheel controls. I use these frequently when framing and shooting a vertical shot. Hand contortion is no longer necessary. Last, but certainly not least, the extra battery life is a huge plus. Two thousand shots on a set of batteries makes for worry-free shoots. Paul
