Additionally, the Nikon F100 is a *lot* like the PZ-1p, only a few years later and with the added technology those few years brought. The main difference seems to be that everybody and their dawg knew about the F100 when it came out, and they still haven't heard of the PZ-1p.

Actually, the Nikon F/N 90 is more similar. The Nikon predated the Pentax.
Howewver, the Pentax mount doesn't flex with a 80-200/2.8 lens (see user
comments on photo.net) like the Nikon does. Nor does its tripod socket flex
like the Nikon (see Galen Rowells comments). Still the Nikon is the semi pro
body while the Pentax is strictly for amateurs according to urban legend.
Incidentally, the camera shares exactly the same shutter unit. I don't even
like the Z-1p....
Strictly from the user standpoint, not the open-up-check-the-guts
standpoint, I thought the F100 looked more like the PZ-1p than the -90
did.Though it's been an awfully long time since I laid eyes on an N90, I
just checked a picture and I don't see two control thumbwheels, f'r
instance.
Since I don't listen to legends, I used my PZ-1 for semi-pro purposes
for several years, and it hasn't ever let me down except one time when I
foolishly went on assignment with no spare battery. (At least, not being
completely stupid, I had a spare body in my bag.)
Not trying to make you like it, though, just saying it's a good instrument.
