The question is: what, if any, settings were you experimenting with
when this started to happen?
You might try using the reset functions to return the camera to
defaults, since it's hard to know what your configuration is at this
point. There are two resets ... one on the Custom functions and the
other in the Rec/Playback/Setup menu functions. See Pp 171-176 in the
manual for the specfics on what these reset.
BTW: In my experience, if you continue to consider the DS body as a
"tempermental pile of plastic and wires" as opposed to a 'real'
camera, it will likely rise to meet your expectations. ;-)
