I did too... also to prevent the adapter from being a "body adapter"
as opposed to a "lens adapter." I didn't like the idea of threading the
M42 onto the body all the time and getting tiny steel shavings on the
sensor.
I ended up carving a small notch into the back of the lens for the
bayonet release to lock into. Then it all latches into place and I can
leave the adapter on the lens. Without doing that, you're always
1/4-turn from the lens falling off on you like you mention.
