I'm sure there's more to come, but thanks for all the feedback. I don't think I have any more reservations now and will start looking for an *ist D at once. I see KEH have one for just under $700 -- is that about right? I don't need lenses. I have those and most of the time it will be on a microscope anyway.

I'll check the voltage on the flash terminals. It works perfectly with an MZ50 by the way.

The *istD works fine with the Pentax AF400T flash, which I believe is an older unit than that Vivitar. Of course it delivers only manual and TTL, since that's all the flash was designed for. The jpeg renderings of the *istD appear to be just fine. Ken Waller shoots nothing but jpeg (thus far) and produces absolutely stunning work.

Jens,
I am sorry, but you're mistaken.
About the *ist D:
No mirror lock-up. But you can choose between 2 sec and 10 sec self timer, which unfortunately doesn't prerelease the mirror (like PZ-1). But it still
reduces vibration (from you touching the camera).
If you set 2 sec self timer, it will *prefire* the mirror.
The most serious weakness of (all?) Pentax DSLRs is rather soft and
generally poor quality of JPG straight out of the camera. But if you
resolve to shoot RAW - you'll be just fine.
Don, I doubt however that *istD will work with older (high discharge
voltage) flashes... You may have to buy the adapter... If you need, I
think I have a link at home that points to at least one possible place
where this adaptor can be found.
