Thanks everyone,
I guess its AA lithium for me -- at
least to start with -- and a DC power
supply for the laboratory where most of
the work will be done.

Alkaline, Nickel metal hydride, or LiIon rechargeable CR V3 compatible?
It depends on how much use you make of the camera.
- Alkaline cells are for emergency only ... not enough power, and camera
operation is sometimes flakey due to power fluctuation.
- If you shoot 200-600 exposures a week, NiMH make good sense. A good
set of NiMH with 2300mah or better capacity, and a good charger, should
return 400-700 exposures per charge and will usually require charging
once a week, regardless of whether they've been used or not.
- If you shoot less or more infrequently, AA Lithium or CRV3 Lithium
disposables have enormous shelf life and last between 1000 and 1300
exposures per set. AA Lithiums are a little less expensive than CRV3
when bought in sets of 8 and 12 cells, nearly the same capacity.
- CRV3 Lithium-Ion cells are expensive and not recommended. Most are
over-voltage for the camera, there is the potential to cause damage.
I find a good strategy for my general use is to use a set of NiMH AAs,
2400mah capacity, and charge them every week. I keep one set of CRV3
disposables in the bag for backup at all times (faster to change than
AAs, smaller number of things to rattle around loose...).
When I went on a 3 week trip in May-June, I carried five sets of Lithium
disposables to eliminate camera battery maintenance. I made 2800
exposures and did not completely exhaust the third set of batteries ...
I think I reached 3600 exposures before I put my NiMH batteries back in,
after returning home. That's 1200 exposures per set of batteries, at
~$8.00 per set, which seemed a reasonable price for the convenience and
lack of maintenance.
