Sociologists, (and damnit I hate to agree with them), would define it as a religion. It has all the earmarks, and can and does have the same effects on it's adherents, they're just generally less organized, though there are organizations dedicated to spreading the word of atheism. I like them no more that I like religious proselytizers.

Come on. :) Atheism is itself a religion.

I don't think so. Atheism is the absence of religion. This is an on-line
definition of religion that I found:

1. a. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as
creator and governor of the universe.
b. A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and
worship.
2. The life or condition of a person in a religious order.
3. A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a
spiritual leader.
4. A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious
devotion.

Each person is their own personal
God, is that not so?

Not by my definition of God.

I think the founders and such were concerned with government establishing
a
particlar, certain, religion as an official state religion.

There is evidence that the founders intended the government to be completely
free of religion.

When you say the word God, are you establishing a religion? Which one?

See the definition of religion above.
