I haven't changed many of the default settings, but I rarely leave them
as they are in processing. They're only meant to provide a baseline. I
did change sharpness to 15, because I do most of the sharpening with
unsharp mask after conversion. The other settings are okay as a
baseline. Generally I start by setting exposure as high as necessary
without getting into clipped highlights. If I need more midrange
brightness, I increase the brightness slider setting. I set the shadow
slider to eliminate any clipping of shadow information or incrrease the
density of the blacks as needed. At that point I set temperature and
tint to achieve the color balance I want. Sometimes after setting
temperature and tint, I'll go back and readjust brightness a bit, until
I'm pleased with the rendering. On high ISO shots, such as those at 800
or 1600, I'll sometimes set color noise and luminosity as needed.
