I know the feeling...
I am a novice and was subscribed to PDML for a few months couple of years
back when I first started taking pictures. But I never really did take
many.
I recently moved to the US and find myself with more time and
inclination to
take pictures so I signed up again.
I use film and haven't taken many pictures so far. Looking for
feedback/pointers
on:
a) I feel embarrassed/shy of going out and taking pictures all by
myself. Am I
the only one who feels this? Recently Paul S. mentioned this in relation
to the
picture taken in Starbucks.
Certainly not the only one. I feel quite comfortable just photographing
things outside now (but that took some time). I'm still trying to find the
courage to photograph people on the street.
b) I joined a Merrimack Valley Camera Club last week (Andover,
Massachusetts)
but they don't go out that often or at least no member seemed
comfortable so
far to take me with them when they shoot.
Can't help there, sorry. Or maybe; do you have some mail adresses? ;-)
c) I am looking for company to get some tips, pointers and help me
improve my
composition lot more than just the technical details.
There are a lot of essays on the subject on the internet. I find that that
helps. And I learn a lot following the photo critique here. I tried
shooting with several people, but in my experience taking a picture is
ultimately something that you do on your own. Maybe I went with the wrong
people?
d) I still shoot film and do not have money to buy a digital SLR. Can I
get any decent film/slide scanner used for less than $150?
I found a Minolta Dimage scan dual III for €100,-, but I think I was
lucky. That scanner (and the II and IV models) are new a lot of bang for
the buck. On the down side: that is generally known, and supply of second
hand ones is shorter than demand.
And to share a picture that I took in India:

All comments more than welcome. This was scanned from a 4x6 print using
the office scanner.
You're a novice? I'd hate to see your pictures when you're experienced :o)
