you can have it both ways. 

My email is provided by clara.net through a pop3 mailbox. This is just some
space and software on their server somewhere. From my PC I connect to my
several pop3 accounts using Outlook 2003, which gives me all the sorting,
filtering etc. functionality that I need, plus excellent integration* with
my calendar, task list and so on. But clara.net also has a reasonable
webmail interface I can use when I'm away from the PC. 

I imagine most modern hosting companies provide this kind of dual facility.

*I'm not normally given to blowing Billy's bugle, but Outlook is really a
superb piece of software once you start to explore and exploit it.
