You should be able to use a generic hot shoe PC adapter. I think I got
mine at B&H for about $10. Hunt around in their flash accessories
section, and you should be able to find it. I'm actually a little
surprised that a PZ-1 doesn't have a PC socket already on the
camera...

For most indoors shooting, your 35-105 should suffice, though I'll
give the disclaimer that I've never taken a Yankee Seminar. You might
want to get their recommendations on what lenses to bring. I do love
my 35-105/3.5 though, and I've used it quite extensively with flash
(Metz 45CT-4), for wedding/event photography.
