It's automagic...

When you say, "gauge" exposure, do you mean the MZ-S reads the
pre-flash and adjusts the final flash accordingly or the photographer
reads a signal from the camera and makes the indicated adjustments?

Thanks,,Jack

Both are generic. P-TTL utilizes a brief preflash burst to gauge exposure. It can provide somewhat more accurate exposure in many situations.

Paul,
Is "TTL" generic and "P-TTL" Pentax specific..or?

Thanks,

Both will work fine as TTL flash units on the IstD. However, it's
important that you make sure your contacts are very clean and your
flash is mounted securely. The *istD will provide excellent
exposures
with either TTL or P-TTl, but it's very fussy about full
electronic
contact. It will fire even with a somewhat less than perfect
connection, but the exposure will be all over the place. With a
good
connection, it will be right on.

I enjoy using my *ist D and want to explore its
abilities with flash. So far, I have only used
the built in flash. I want to use an external
flash to gain more power. I have a Pentax 280T
and a Metz 45CL-4 with the SCA 372 adapter - both
work well on my LX.

Will these units give me TTL auto flash control
with the *ist D? Or do I need a more modern
Pentax flash and/or a different SCA adapter? Is
the a Metz adapter for P-TTL? Questions,
questions!

Any help or advice gratefully received. Pointers
to sources of authoritative information will be
welcome.

Yes, I have read the manual. It's pretty
useless, except as an ancouragement to buy the
latest and most expensive flash unit from Pentax!
