I have done all my scans (all 35mm) for the past year
on an Epson RX500 all-in-one, and have a few
observations:
First, contrast and saturation are a problem, and I
think that is because of the uncoated glass between
the slide and the scanning head. Turning up the
contrast and saturation in the scanning software
helps. Adding some unsharp mask either in the
scanning software or in post-processing helps a lot,
too.
Second, while the Epson scanning software is fine for
PESOs, the results are MUCH better with VueScan if one
is going to make enlargements.
Third, using VueScan I have made 5x7 prints that are
almost indistinguishable from R6 prints from The
Slideprinter. At 8x10 my scans are acceptable, but
the R6 are clearly superior.
So, if I was going to make my own 8x10 or larger
prints, or scan a whole bunch of my slides for
archival purposes, I would get a dedicated film
scanner. For the web, or for a quick print or two,
the flatbed scanner does fine. When I want a larger
print, I send it off the The Slideprinter, and they
can provide me with a whole mess of prints for the
cost of a film scanner (not to mention the time it
takes!).
Cheers,
Rick
