For sure.  I had the equipment.  Also the hardware can be used for other
purposes.

Quality is good enough for the web, newsletters, brochures, etc.
I have access to high quality scanners at the college if needed so there
are no plans to buy one at present.

I spent a while trying to copy slides to digital using the istD, a bellows and slide holder. Unfortunately, the slide holder needs to be farther from the lens than the extension will allow. I found that the 77mm with a #2 close-up lens would just do it, but try to find a good close-up lens in 49mm...... I might have a machine shop make me a longer extension for the slide holder at some point.
Dust on the slide, and on the camera sensor are both huge problems though.
