Hello Jens, My personal feeling is that the sensor area is larger than we would like to think. Achieving AF within the sensor bounderies (not visible to us) is all the system is going to do.
An intersting, though mostly useless exercise is to take a picture of a ruler that is at an angle to the camera, and see where the focus is in relation to the chosen focus point.
