I certainly wouldn't have bought it for $600.

Complain all you want (not sure who you can complain to that will do any good)
Pay the $600 if you need the program.

It was offered to me as a way to make my home computer compatible with what I have @ work.

There's an easy way to buy Microsoft Office at a very good price. Microsoft offers special student pricing. Just sign up for a course at your local community college, any course, and you are officially a student. I got Microsoft Office for something like $ 150 that way. Many other software makers offer student pricing, too, and you can even buy specially priced bundles of software through schools.
