Good advice, also there are plenty of detailed on-line image quality comparisons of flat panel displays. Just do yourself a favour and put some of your monitor budget aside for a decent hardware calibrator, even the most expensive monitor will benefit from calibration. I run a pair of monitors, a top line 22" CRT as my primary and a mid range 18" TFT as my secondary monitor, the even though the blacks aren't as deep on the TFT when calibrated it's quite usable.
