Good advice, also there are plenty of detailed on-line image quality
comparisons of flat panel displays. Just do yourself a favour and put some of
your monitor budget aside for a decent hardware calibrator, even the most
expensive monitor will benefit from calibration.

I run a pair of monitors, a top line 22" CRT as my primary and a mid range 18" TFT as my secondary monitor, the even though the blacks aren't as deep on the TFT when calibrated it's quite usable. The following pic shows two copies of
the one image displayed across both monitors.
