Pre-flash metering really has problems when I am doing wedding and portrait work. When you get a blinker, they really tend to blink right after the pre-flash causing many shots of eyes not fully open. While it technically works well, people don't handle it very well. A very mixed bag in my opinion.
Right, and precisely why many pros have gone back to old-fashioned auto-flash using the sensor on the flash unit. I compared Canon's e- TTL and i-TTL to a Vivitar 283 and found the old Vivitar (mine is so old it says "Made in Japan"!) much more consistent and accurate. Perfecting flash metering for DSLR cameras is a quest which has so far missed its mark. Of all the camera systems I have tested, Nikon has the most accurate TTL flash for their DSLR cameras, and it is still nowhere near as good as what they have for their film cameras.
