A 500mm/f8 mirror lens can useful, but I wouldn't spend
more than $100 for one, unless it's one of the cult
classics like the Vivitar Series One Solid Cat.

Somewhere on my website I discuss my Soligor 500mm
mirror and show some sample photos. I actually have two
of them now, and took the newest one for a test run
today. It does not focus as close as the older version,
but it is easier to focus and has a tripod mount (not
rotating collar).

My 500/8 mirror lenses are both older Soligor lenses.
They come in T-mount, usually with a Pentax screw mount
adapter which can be removed and replaced with a
K-mount. I paid $80 for one and $90 for the other.
Replacing the screw-mount with a K-mount cost another
$20.

A hood on the lens helps a lot, as does a tripod mount.
No matter which mirror lens you try, it will probably
focus the wrong way compared to Pentax lenses.

Shooting at f8 requires 400 ISO film and a sunny day,
bright shade, or a bright overcast to get the high
(1/500 and faster) shutter speeds I like to use with a
mirror lens.
