I care because the myth that Pentax doesn't offer pro gear or pro service is just
that; a myth. Pentax offers both pro grade gear, and this include 35mm format, and pro
service. Defining it as non pro gear because "not a significant enough number of pros
are using it" is meaningless. It would be a tragedy if the mostly north american
generated myth that only Nikon and Canon offer pro systems got a hold. It doesn't do
anybody a favour if the belief that in order for a Pentax shooters to go serious or
professional they have no choice than changing brands in order to get pro service and
equipment.
Outside north america at least, there are plenty of professional photographers who use
non Nikon or Canon 35mm equipment. I remember seeing a overview in 1989, admittedly
awhile ago but still, of european professional nature photographers choice of camera
systems. Not surpisingly Nikon occupied the number one spot with twice the market
share as number two. The next three places were occupied by Olympus, Canon and Pentax
in that order. There were very little difference between Olympus, Canon and Pentax.
Many of the high profile Scandinavian professional nature photographers use Pentax;
either medium format or 35mm or both. And some of them shoot front pages for National
Geographic. The products they use are built at the same professional standards as
everybody elses and the service they received can be compared favourably to everybody
elses. The fact that Pentax along with Leica, Contax, Minolta and Olympus choose not
to market their service at professional use do not detract from the fact that many of
their products are professional grade and the service they offer are professional. Nor
does the fact that some of these products don't offer 8fps or 100% viewfinder
coverage. Believeing otherwise is believeing marketing hyperbole.
BTW The reason I'm currently using Pentax and not Nikon is that Nikon cannot compete
with Pentax when it comes to professional service on pro grade equipment where I live.
This includes both when buying the equipment and servicing.
