Nikon was years behind the other four big manufacturers in the 70's
technology wise. Pentax was the first to apply aperture priority auto (ES)
and was a pioneer in electronics in cameras along with Yashica.
They did a few things that the others didn't do.
Continuously variable shutter speeds above the sync speed in manual was
nice, as was timed exposures to 10 seconds.
Mostly Nikon was building tanks, and didn't want unproven technology in
their cameras until it was proven reliable.
Pity the 70s was the last time Pentax was anywhere near the technological
front lines.
