Yes, the SD card goes into the adapter, then the adapter goes into
the camera. It's a little inconvenient, but not overwhelmingly so. To
make it more convenient, I bought a second SD->CF card adapter, that
way I can have two 1G cards loaded and ready to go, load one while
the other is in use, etc. They're about $25 or so for the adapters.

Yes, they reduce card speed but I find it to be 15-20% with Sandisk
Ultra II cards, not 34%.
