Wild guess, I suspect that it was an issue when they showed the camera, but
they hoped it was one that they could resolve. When they couldn't resolve
it, they benched the camera.
That certainly matches the publicly-available information about that
sensor at the time Pentax were talking about the "MZ-D" (or whatever).
They weren't the only company who believed that the sensor problems
could be fixed, after all.
Indeed, considering that sensor pretty much killed Contax as a brand
(The Sensor in the Contax N Digital was the same one to be used in the
MZ-D).
