Looking again, I do like the darker foreground quite a lot. I'm going to implement something similar. Thanks for the suggestion.

adjustment layer to the overall image to increase contrast and then a
curves layer mask adjustment layer to darken the foreground &

If truth be told, I've shot him before -- wearing a kilt. He's a
transplanted Scot and seems to be a rather pleasant fellow. The pain
and rage are apparently not directed at photographers. I am thankful
for that.
