Bill Owens swears by using 181 however and that route avoids the rediculous 1+ hour detour. Otherwise you might as well come up I-77 and take 421 over to Boone and 105 to GFM (2.5 to 3.0 hours).
Bill sent me to GFM on the I-77 to Statesville (had I had more time, I would have stopped at the Balloonworks factory for a visit), and then over to Boone and on to GFM. I followed him back to Charlotte on a much more scenic route (181?), though the closer we got to his place, the more confusing the road system got.
