Then you presumably haven't used any of the later Pentax AF cameras
(such as a PZ or MZ body).  The *ist-D (and the DS, though not the DL)
have almost as large a viewfinder image as many of those cameras.
The later low-end MZs, and the *ist film body, are particularly bad.

This is one area where the older and cheaper the camera you use, the
larger the viewfinder image will be.  As more and more information got
added to the in-viewfinder display, the amount of space available for
the actual image had to shrink.
