Markus,
It's a smaller format SLR camera. If you grew up with Rollei TLRs and
Hasselblad SLRs, you'd think your 35mm camera was like looking down a
dark tunnel.
I find the DS' eye relief and magnification excellent, and the
focusing screen has good 'tooth' for manual focus. The MX I had was a
strain to see the whole focusing screen at once, too little eye
relief with too much magnification. The brightness was good, yes.

It looks like a dark tunnel compared to any and even the cheapest film

nothing to be proud off and for a glass wearer like me it's even
worse.
That's one of the reasons that keeps me away from going digital, I
surely
hope a next model will be better.

If you use AF most of the time, you'll hardly know the difference.
The DS viewfinder is a little larger and a bit brighter, which makes
it easier to use manual focus. Also, the DS viewfinder has
interchangeable focusing screens which allows me to use a retical
scale or grid patterned focusing screen for when alignment issues
are
important.
If I had the choice between the two bodies, I'd pick the DS on the
strength of its viewfinder.
