Yes, such people are hobbyists and enthusiasts. Nothing wrong with that. Why complain so much then? You should be enjoying the challenge and intricacies of new developments, while exploring the joys of using the equipment you own.

Around your part of the world, professional photographers don't get paid by using their equipment? Don't depreciate their equipment based on business tax rules, etc? What do they get paid for? and how do they manage their business assets?

The people who can afford to change entire equipment kits on a whim are usually professionals of a different stripe, such as doctors or lawyers.

No one said anything about "change entire equipment kits one a whim". I change my equipment when there appears to be a sound reason to do so, usually financial. I can choose to change equipment on a whim too, and might do so when I feel reasonably wealthy, but that's not the point of this discussion.
