For most of us the equipment doesn't pay for anything. Possibly

Yes, such people are hobbyists and enthusiasts. Nothing wrong
with that. Why complain so much then? You should be enjoying the
challenge and intricacies of new developments, while exploring
the joys of using the equipment you own.
Around this part of the world, such people are called professional
photographers.
Around your part of the world, professional photographers don't get
paid by using their equipment? Don't depreciate their equipment based
on business tax rules, etc? What do they get paid for? and how do
they manage their business assets?
The people who can afford to change entire equipment kits on a whim
are usually professionals of a different stripe, such as doctors or
lawyers.
No one said anything about "change entire equipment kits one a whim".
I change my equipment when there appears to be a sound reason to do
so, usually financial. I can choose to change equipment on a whim
too, and might do so when I feel reasonably wealthy, but that's not
the point of this discussion.
