About 3 years ago I did a field test on SMC-A 70-210/4 and Nikkor AF
80-200/2.8 (the 1st Nikkor AF 2 touch zoom with tripod collar). Pictures
were taken near infinity and mount on tripod (Gitzo G275 ballhead and
Manfrotto 190 tripod). Film was Fuji Sensia II 100. Under a 8X loupe, I have
noticed pictures from the Nikkor were "slightly" sharper, not much but can
be seen. The only thing interesting was the Nikkor at 200mm wide open gave
me a very soft picture which I do not understand. I remember I double check
the focus for every shot so human error was unlikely the cause.

After using the SMC-A 70-210/4 for many years (I have had two over the
years), I have found it does particluar bad at close distance (macro). But
for landscape, it's great (zoom creep is a problem though) and the DOF scale
is useful.

Alan Chan
