FWIW, I saw the post on the list and even sent a suggestion.  However, that
message has neither turned up on the list nor in the archives.

You're comparing a 16-bit PSD viewed in Photoshop with a compressed 8-bit
image shown outside Photoshop.  How to the JPEGs look when viewed within
Photoshop?  What color profile are you using for the PSD files?
