Light is the key, as others have suggested. WYSIWYG
lighting (and viewing) makes everything much easier, so
daylight, halogens, strobes with modeling lights, etc
are a good bet.

I've quit using film for small product shots. I use a
digital camera and a small light stage with two fifteen
watt daylight flourescents. The lighting is not as
controllable as I would like, mainly because the power
of the flourescents is so low I can't properly diffuse
them.

Open shade (I have a covered porch) with reflectors for
fill works pretty good.
