The IR release will be useless for your needs. The wired remote release is a very simple thing. One ground wire and two hot wires. One hot triggers the half-press switch, the other the shutter release switch. You can buy a ready-made extension cable for a three connector microjack from Radio Shack and just use the standard Pentax Cable Switch CS205 or the Canon Remote Switch RS-60E3 with it. (The Canon part is less expensive and is identical in operation, has a longer cord.)
