The IR release will be useless for your needs.

The wired remote release is a very simple thing. One ground wire and  
two hot wires. One hot triggers the half-press switch, the other the  
shutter release switch. You can buy a ready-made extension cable for  
a three connector microjack from Radio Shack and just use the  
standard Pentax Cable Switch CS205 or the Canon Remote Switch RS-60E3  
with it. (The Canon part is less expensive and is identical in  
operation, has a longer cord.)
