Actually, alkaline still leads in terms of capacity. For example,
Eveready Energizer AA is rated at 2850 mAh. However, alkaline has a
different discharge characteristics, and the usual 0.8v cutoff voltage
used in measuring capacity does not apply very well to photographic
equipment. So we probably won't get the 2850 mAh if we use them in a
flash, for example.
