The newer version (475) of the Tripod I have (075) has click stops on the leg supports. This makes it very easy to set the three legs the same distance out. I've made a gauge from a piece of scrap steel. It goes into the tube and each support is closed until it stops; then the thumb nut is tightened. Its very easy to do -- but a click stop would be nice. I thought of drilling holes for pins, but that would weaken the supports. Why do I want to do this? I'm planning small panoramas.
