I love my monopod, and its easily as good as a tripod in some cases.. 
Where you can jam it into the ground, lean it against trees and rocks, and 
all that good stuff.

The "proper" way to use a monopod is to angle it forward, and then lean 
into it. Thus, you form a tripod with the monopod being the front leg and 
your own two legs being the rear.

Putting the camera on the top of the unit precludes you from being able to 
lean into it on anything except upward facing shots.
