That appears to be the way it's done; they'll take you out as long as you want and it seemed like a good deal to me. I went last year (again) and spent 3 hrs. "out there".
I'm not sure that you can hire your own car and then get a native american to take you in; my impression was that you only used their jeep. They know a lot of good spots for photos, but you'll need to manage the time of day=lighting. > We'd like to camp in Monument Valley if possible.
