Hello Tom, When we went last year, I looked up all the tours available and finally settled upon this one: http://www.faroutexpeditions.com/
The big attractions to this one were the ability to have the trip custom tailored to our desires and the AIR CONDITIONED 4wd van. Also the knowledge and personal service of our guide, Vaughn, was exceptional. So I arranged with Vaughn's wife to have an afternoon/evening tour, instead of the regular tour he does. We switched the lunch at a hogan to a dinner that they provided for us. We stayed overnight in Bluff, UT (multiple choices) which is where the tour heads out from. On the way down, Vaughn gave us some background on the area and told us quite a bit about the terrain besides Monument Valley. He leads many expeditions for photographers seeking out indian ruins and such outside of MV. We left just after lunch and he took us in to MV and took the back roads tour. But, he allowed us to stop anywhere and stay for as long as we liked. He told us all about the things we saw and was great company. A little later towards evening, he took us to the picnic area and laid out a wonderful dinner spread. It was so cool to eat in the middle of MV and have such a nice dinner. Then we drove all over trying to decide where to catch the sunset. We must have gone about 5 or 6 places before we settled on a spot. After sunset he drove us back to Bluff and we spent the night in one of the local motels. All told, we spent about 9 hours with him. It was well worth the trip. Everyone in our group was more than thrilled with the experience and the hospitality. If I were to go again, I would book this one for sure.
