I have 5.5 gigs of CF cards. They usually suffice for even a long overnight hike. On vacation or work trips, I take my laptop. I need it for other reasons in addition to photography. It will run for about four hours on the battery under constant use. My lens kit for most hikes is the DA 12-24, the DA 16-45 and the DA 50-200. Although I have been known to hike up into the Santa Monica mountains with a 6x7, a stout tripod and three lenses: a 300/4, a 105/2.4 and a 55/4. It becomes both a photo op and a workout.
