It must be said that I was referring to the R1 in that phrase.

In the time periods when the Sony F707/717, Panasonic FZ10 and Canon  
10D were my mainline camera, I did the three battery schema as above.  
The R1 is more economical on power and I don't tend to shoot quite so  
often with it so two batteries suffice. For the K10D, I'll likely do  
the three battery thing again, depending upon how many exposures per  
charge it gets and how fast its charger restores a battery.

I do prefer the notion of having one battery to swap rather than two  
or four to reload the camera. Less chance of error, less chance of  
stuff dropping all over the floor when you fumble. I don't like all  
the different chargers and such, but for that minor inconvenience I  
can deal.
