>I think than D&P. So then I was wondering about >scanning negatives into my computer. I have HP Scanjet >3300C. Any point in trying to use this, or will I just >ruin my negs and my scanner? I don't think my scanner Jody, if you put a sheet of negs onto the glass of an A4 scanner, and then an up-turned lightbox on top of that, with a little fine-tuning, you can make pretty reasonable contact sheets. However, I don't do this: after a while, one can usually assess negs by looking directly at them. Get yourself a decent neg scanner - it'll be the best thing you could do! I use a Nikon Coolscan (eBay, about $350) and I print to an Epson Stylus Photo EX (new a couple of years ago) and the results are superb - admittedly not as good a print done in the traditional way, but if I were to grade them on a scale of 1 to 10, with darkroom being 10: the Epson rates a good 8+. A dye-sublimation printer will get you up in the 9's but that's expensive. For value-for-money digital printing, you will be pleasantly surprised at the results. If you can, go and look at someone else's results from your printer make and model, and if you don't like them, look at others. As for scanners, flatbeds with transparencly hoods *can* work okay, but you'll never reach the results a dedicated neg scanner will give. Get the best you can afford - I'd say buy a better name second-hand, than a mediocre name new. Polaroid used to be a good name (IMO) but I had a Sprintscan that was absolute crap and their support was shoddy. The Nikon scanners are very good. When scanning a neg, you need at least 2000 dpi for some decent scans - higher is better, but watch out - large file sizes mean you need good computer power as well.
