Interesting.  Our banks decided during the 90s that keeping branches  
open was too costly, so they closed pretty much everything outside of  
major urban centres, and did a pretty serious downsizing of what was  
left.  There was an uproar, but it was basically ignored.  To  
encourage us to use machines, we're charged $3.00 for teller  
transactions, while machine transactions are often free.

Around 10 years ago I needed a bank cheque written so I went to the  
closest branch, and they had a staff member in the waiting area whose  
job it was to ask people why they need to use a teller instead of the  
machine on the outside wall.  I'd have found that job pretty  
demoralising, as it's encouraging the customers to give the bank a  
reason to downsize you and your colleagues...
