I had the circa 2003 series EF 300/4 L IS. It had three modes - off,  
pan, normal. I tested it with the 'normal' mode turned on and also  
'off' on tripod ... never saw a difference there either. But the lens  
consumes less power with the IS turned off. If there's no difference,  
I'd leave it off on a tripod. ;-)
