There's nothing environmentally unfriendly - it's probably much better 
than the mandated disposal system for commercial waste that companies 
sign up to when they get licences for premises that serve food and 
drink.  Local authorities tend to find that, if they don't have 
mandatory waste disposal systems, the waste gets dumped illegally by 
some businesses.  Starbucks is effectively doing that.  Unless it has an 
exception clause.
