Hehe -
Well as it happens I do this all the time - in elements I
click on adjust color
and a thumbnails pop up to show previews of adjustments with
a sliding scale thingy
for amount.

It is one of the annoyances of tecno-babble that something
as simple as adjusting the
hues and tones needs a non-painterly word such as "curves"

I look at the images and fiddle with brightness, saturation,
hue, color, etc and slide
the levers around until I see what I want.... sometimes
applying into an area I've lassoed
or hit with my "magic wand", sometimes to the entire image.

I don't mean I do it to every image when "all the time" but
I use all these tools -
The name "curves" just doesn't mean anything to me. Or
channels.

The word 'CURVE' doesn't appear anywhere on my screen when
I'm working in elements.

thanks for that direct explanation, Jack :)
