SR with non-CPU zooms is a little fiddly. Just started using it yesterday, as I got my first A zoom (Previously my only zoom was the SMC_F 35-80). What I've been doing is mostly at one end or the other, so I've been manually entering the closest focal length when working on the zoom. This works for me as I usually use a zoom like a multi-length prime, switching focal lengths only when needed rather than zooming all the time.
